What can I backup with a Data Only Backup?
When you install our software on a PC there are default rules to include common data files and folders including:
- My Documents folder
- Favorites folder
- Desktop folder
- Email files - Outlook, Outlook Express and Eudora
- Quicken, QuickBooks, Peachtree, TurboTax, TaxCut and Money data files
- Office Documents such as Excel, Word, Access, Publisher, Lotus, PDF's, etc.
The default rules will typically provide complete protection of user data. However, there are no restrictions on modifying these selections to meet your individual needs. Files and folders can be added or removed from the backup set easily through an explorer type interface which clearly indicates what is included in the backup.
For installations on file servers running Windows Server 2000 or 2003 the location of user data will be unique to the server. Because of this we provide a blank backup selection for file servers which will allow you to easily select the required files and folders to be included in the backup. This is typically very easy on a file server as the data is stored in a well defined structure and shared on the network.
When does the backup run?
Once the software has been installed and the backup selection confirmed you are ready to backup. The software contains a scheduler which you can use to adjust the time at which your backup runs. Most customers will run the backup at night when the computer is not in use but you can schedule that backup based on whatever timeframe works best for you. You can also start a manual backup at any time through the desktop or tool tray icons.
The initial backup will take some time since all the data is new and needs to be transferred to Iron Mountain’s mirrored data centers. Several technologies are used to minimize the time this backup will take including SendOnce, Delta Block and file compression. In addition, all files are encrypted securely on your computer before transmission to the data center and stored encrypted.
Once the initial backup is complete, the daily backups are very quick with most customers finding the backup time to be about 5 – 20 minutes on a daily basis.
Our data backup service provides companies with a much more secure and reliable method to ensure that their important files are protected. For more information on the details of our software and security of data please see our "How it Works" page.
